Title: The Magic You So Despise
Author: angelqueen04
Artist: aaweth_edain
Pairings/characters: minor established Ygraine/Uther | Alice, Arthur, Gaius, Merlin, Morgana, Tristan de Bois, Uther, Ygraine
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 61,474 words
Warnings: Corporal punishment of young children; violence against a child
Summary: In a world where Ygraine Pendragon lives, all is not golden. In a world where Arthur Pendragon grows up with two parents, life is not easier. In a world where Morgana of Cornwall grows up never fearing Uther Pendragon, her life is still a lonely one. In a world where magic is not banned, there is still the prejudice and suspicions of kings to contend with. In a world where Merlin Emrys is born the second son of Camelot, the weight of destiny is no less debilitating. There are no easy answers, no simple, well-traveled paths to walk. A pre-series AU, first story in a series.
Author's Notes: First and foremost, I have to thank regan_x, who served as sounding board, beta, cheerleader, and all-around handholder for the entire time that I worked on this story. Without her, this story would never have made it past the first chapter. Heck, it probably would never have made it past the prologue. Thank you, thank you so much, my dear, for seeing me through this whole process and for helping me especially in these last frantic days as I struggled to get the last of this tale written down. I dedicate this entire story to you. I'd also like to thank aaweth_edain for her lovely artwork made especially for the story. It's all so wonderful! In truth, when I began to develop this story, the ideas quickly began to spin out of control, and I began to see that I would never be able to incorporate everything into one story, not in just six months. As a result, this story is merely the first in a series. There will be at least two that follow it. This is just the beginning, but it's a beginning that I hope you all will enjoy.
Artist's Notes: Well, here's my stuff. It's not as much as I would have liked to have made. However, they came out really well I do believe. I hope you enjoy my manips as well as the story.

Words, I can haz 'em

Still working at my paperlegends story. I'd hoped to be at 15k by May 1st, but I came pretty close. I'm also hoping to have a complete draft written by the end of June, so that my beta will have all of July to work on it and get it back in time for the August 1st deadline.

Back to work. ;)

*dies laughing*

I just saw one of the trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness and SPOILERS for the trailer - mainly just me cracking up about one shotCollapse )

Pet Peeve #654

People who drive in the wrong direction in the rows in public parking lots. For goodness' sake, the arrows point which way you're supposed to go. Driving in the opposite direction can lead to driving accidents, as almost happened to me the other day when I was trying to back out of my parking spot and drive in the correct direction. I was not pleased to have my heart jump into my throat when I looked in the other direction out of habit and saw a car coming in the wrong fucking direction.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the lovely birthday wishes. Everyone's been so wonderful today. Thank you!

I'm quite pleased that I've gotten this far. Pretty much all of what's been written is the prologue for my paperlegends story, but now I'm able to move into the story proper and get on with the plot. YAYNESS!

I may get this story finished after all, and thus won't have to flake out on the last ever paperlegends round. *beams*

Title: Right Place, Right Time
Author: angelqueen04
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers/Warnings: Series 3 Christmas Special, all of Merlin | some description of catastrophic injury, though nothing too graphic
Characters/Pairings: Merlin, Matthew Crawley, Mary Crawley, Richard Clarkson, Isobel Crawley, Robert Crawley, Cora Crawley
Summary: The horror of the wreck contrasted terribly with the beauty of the forest surrounding it.

Notes: I just couldn't resist. If anyone could have saved the day in the S3CS, it was Merlin. For the purposes of this story, anyway.

Downton Abbey

I recently had been borrowing Downton Abbey from the library, having been made curious by a teaser trailer. I'd finally seen the first and second series when I decided to bite the bullet and just buy all three series. Holy. Cow. I have a new obsession.

Cut for me rambling and whatnotCollapse )

The fic for paperlegends is distinctly not cooperating. I want to convey a certain tone, but it's just not coming out, no matter how many times I rewrite a scene. I just can't quite capture what I want for the story. As a result, I'm debating the merits of switching to writing a different story.

I've been discussing this other potential story with regan_x, an AU where magic isn't needed to help Ygraine conceive Arthur. She gives birth to him without magical aid and lives, then giving birth to another son about a year-and-a-half later - Merlin. However, we've had so many good ideas for the story that it could rapidly grow out of control. Basically, I'm thinking I could commit to dealing with the familial shenannigans of the Pendragons during the pre-canon years and the events of the first series. There's so much to delve into there alone that it would fulfill the 30k requirement for paperlegends and leave me with something manageable to write. I can always come back to it later and write further installments if I want.

Progress is much better for the moment. The story is flowing, at least at a pace that I'm satisfied with. Arthur loves to complain about the council, it seems.

My brain is weird

My dreams are weird. Last night, I had one about being a contestant on Project Runway. This isn't an unusual occurance, as I've had several similar dreams in the past, but it morphed into something a bit different. Our first challenge was to do some type of casualwear inspired by historical figures (go figure). We were given several books on different people, and I ended up choosing the Kennedys, specifically JFK and Jackie. Then, out of nowhere, I found myself in the White House where I was playing the minder/big sister to little Caroline Kennedy. I then discovered that I had a bit of a crush on JFK (who looked more like Bruce Greenwood than his actual historical self - my crush on the actor resurging?) and that he was actually attracted to me as well. I, however, refused to do anything about it, because I loved Caroline and Jackie far too much to betray them in such a way. Jackie was also aware of the mutual attraction, and kept warning JFK to leave me be.

Richard III: DNA confirms twisted bones belong to king.

Being the enormous history geek that I am, this is fascinating news for me. I'd been following the excavation and exhumation when they first discovered the skeleton, and have waited with great anticipation to hear one way or another if they'd actually found the king. I imagine that the discovery is going to cause a huge resurgance of interest in Richard III and the times in which he lived. The debate as to whether or not he was responsible for the disappearance of Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, will probably rage even more than it already does.

*settles in to revel in the historical geekery*

Progress... sort of

So I've started working on my paperlegends story. When I signed up, I was hoping to write maybe 500 words a day. Today's the third and:

Yeah, it's not working so far. Still, I've got most of the story outlined, and I pretty much know where it's going.

I CAN DO IT. This is the last year for paperlegends. No way I'm flaking out. ;)

Damn, I'm popular lately

Since the new year began, I've been called for three different interviews for library jobs. The first one, just days after the first of the year, didn't result in a job offer, and the second one was just this past Tuesday and the third one is next Wednesday, but still. That's a fair few interviews in such a short space of time. Certainly more than I was getting last year.

The interview I had on Tuesday is actually for a full-time Teen Services position, so I'm rather a bit hopeful about it. The only downside is that it's over an hour drive from home. I may have to live at my grandmother's at least part of the time if I get it (because if they offer it to me, I'm certainly not going to turn it down simply because it's a bit of a drive).

The one scheduled for next Wednesday is a part-time library job not far from where I work now, so it's doable. I'm even considering keeping my current job and trying to do both, since my current job is currently only giving me roughtly about 15 hours a week. With the library job being 20 hours a week, it would give me a nice round bit of money to help me pay for my loans and have a bit left over. Only thing is, I'm not sure how long I'll want to do it - the idea of spending another holiday season in retail makes me shudder.

It's that time again!
